Welcome to my entry for Thursday Doors this week. A discovery in the area of Napton, Missouri is one of the oldest churches in Saline County. Napton was originally known as Jonesboro according to some Quick Facts on Google Maps. This church, Zoar Baptist Church, is named from a Biblical verse, Genesis 19:22, which names the place Lot fled to from Sodom and Gomorah. I was truly thrilled that my daughter discovered this one! The size of this one is pretty small according to some side-view photos I discovered online. It has four 16-pane windows on each side so is essentially a box shaped church. Sorry no side views this time.
As you an see in the photos below, a bit of history is given on signage in the front of the church; so appreciated by those of us who want to know more. One interesting historical fact shared gives a vivid account during one church service. It mentions that the state militia surrounded the church during a service in Civil War times and made the men inside fall in line and march away. Apparently they didn’t even get to the end of the sermon before being ‘drafted’.
This building is now nearly 200 years old. I wonder if there will be a celebration next year? I think I’ll put it on my list of events to watch for. And I hope you’ll wander on over to Dan’s at No Facilities for see his list for this week’s Thursday Doors entries.
Question:Â What’s the difference between a banjo player and a large pepperoni pizza?
Answer:Â The pizza can feed a family of four.
Great photos and I enjoyed the history. Thank you!
