Grandeur Beyond the Doors

2024Badge

As promised last week, I’m taking you on an inside tour of Basilica Cathedral in St. Louis, Missouri. I saved some of the historical information for this post and I hope you’ll find it as interesting as I did.

  • A devastating tornado that drained the Archdiocesan treasury was a major setback as it had been planned well before 1905.
  • $1,000,000 in the currency value of the day was quite an astronomical sum for the undertaking, but it was no where near what it cost in the end. Do we even know what the final tally was???
  • Byzantine and Romanesque design, was chosen by a selection committee.
  • I love that the cornerstone was laid on my birthday! And that the first mass was celebrated 6 years later to the day.
  • Of course, Tiffany and Company were involved.
  • Blessed Sacrament Chapel gates were from the Austrian Exhibit at the 1904 World’s Fair
  • St. Louis was once called The Rome of the West.

All bulleted items were from the main webpage of the Cathedral with the exception of the last entry. It was from another blog dedicated to the St. Louis Catholic faith. To see more on this grand cathedral, I recommend this link.

The details in each photo are worth your time to click on. I guarantee it! I did not caption all of these. But if you have any questions on each, I'm happy to answer the best I can. I'm not Catholic, but I might know enough to offer insight? No promises.

Thanks to Kirsten-youngest daughter, for her time and wonderful attention to detail in capturing these photos for me today! I hope you will take time to visit Dan @ NoFacilities for more door captures in this weekly challenge.
