Let’s Talk Quilts/Inez’sClippings

Inez’s Clippings – Quilt Block Variations

The quilt blocks in the clipping above must have been a bit of inspiration for Inez. There are 5 ways shown to use the quilt pattern with the types of curves you see above. Names may vary compared to today’s modern quilt names, but in this pre-WWII era sampling, you have Nonesuch, Fools Puzzle, Rocky Road to Dublin, Falling Timber & Vine of Friendship. How do I know these hale from Pre-1941? On the back is an advertisement from 1932 for Singercraft. Just love those old advertisements!

As for those instruction for Keeping Well– burning clothes sounds pretty serious. And in those days, it was expensive to replace clothing. Especially when used clothes were nearly always repurposed into quilts, resized for younger family members or just used as rags for cleaning. Nothing wasted. As in the advertisement above, they were recommending using old garments for rugmaking. Something must be said for the old frugal ways.

Fast forward to today and my fabric stash would seem like a gold mine to my grandmother and her forebears. . I remember the days we stopped in at the Ben Franklin store and she’d be sure to see what fabrics were in stock. Good times!

I wanted to show my fabric choices for a quilt that won’t be finished until 2025.

This is a lot of color for one quilt and if you are curious as to why I’d need all of this color, let me explain with some Pinterest photos I’ve saved. Maybe you will figure it out–or maybe not?

The quilts shown above are all Temperature Quilts. Blues at the bottom are the coldest temperature colors, and the Reds are hottest days. Easy peasy right? Just have to keep up with that temperature table I have going in Word.

My High & Low temps will be for Sedalia, Missouri. And the temps were reentered at a later date of 36 and 27 for the high and low temperatures January 1, 2024.

I have decided to use mostly fabrics I already had in my stash, even though they are not solid color fabrics. A little pattern is going to keep it interesting as well as make it solely my own. Also, a selection of 12 fabrics is needed to keep the colors flowing. My Word version only had minimal highlighting shades. And I’m not using gray or brown tones. As for the design I’ve chosen, I’ll keep you posted on that plan once I have a bit of the quilt started. I promise you it won’t be one of Inez’s quilt inspirational blocks from today’s clipping. Maybe someone else can tackle all those curves.

Q: What does a long court hearing and a banjo performance have in common?

A: There is always a sigh of relief when the case is closed.
