I could write a whole post on coffee cup addiction. Does anyone else suffer this affliction? For today, though, I’ll stick to the topic of Thursday Doors. As I mentioned last week, we visited a museum. First museum visit since 2020. Way overdo! The Kansas Aviation Museum was our stop. Sitting right next to McConnell Air Force Base. And the address in the title seemed so appropriate for this Independence Day weekend. I had the whole theme going in my head before I ever finished snapping photos! But fair warning, this will be a series of posts because there was just so much to see.

Parking was in the back so these were the first taken. One take-away is that the first designs of Control Towers must have been spot on because they all seem to look the same, even today.

Thanks to Ron for his steady hand in getting this shot above. Airplanes were Everywhere and I’m glad he caught these so well in the foreground. Notice the Art Deco style? The building, designed by Glen H. Thomas, served as Wichita Municipal Airport’s terminal from 1935 to 1954. During our tour, it was mentioned that plans began as early as the late 1920’s. This would explain the attention to the Art Deco era.

Some postcards memorialized here since they’ll probably be mailed out to penpals.

Hope you’ll take some time to visit Dan @NoFacilities for more wonderful Thursday Door entries. So many doors, so little time!

  1. As someone who grew up in Kansas, I’ve always found Wichita’s presence in the aviation sector so fascinating! It’s as if it connects Wichita to the world. The art deco style on the terminal is really unique.
