A to Z News/Sunday Sampler

Each year since 2014, I’ve participated in the April Blogging from A to Z Challenge. It’s a blogging extravaganza in which you blog every day except on Sundays. There is no big prize involved. You are only required to enter a blog post for each letter of the alphabet and to visit at least 5 other bloggers each day and let them know you were there. It’s a wonderful way to meet tons of new people, and keep in touch with old acquaintances. I have read some wonderful writing, learned new things, and, hopefully, given inspiration to others by completing this challenge for the last 4 years. Sweet Stripes/WPC/Sunday Sampler

Sweet

To begin with, I like to provide pillows to the children in my home daycare. Soft spots to lay your head when you aren’t really ready to be awake yet. Getting here at 6:30 a.m. is not always on the agenda of a child under age 5. Getting up from nap can have the same outcome. They often let everyone know. Pillows offer something to clutch, hug, squeeze, sit on or even punch. There are days you don’t know what you’ll get in the realm of childhood emotions. I present an option to keep those pillows neat as a button and the children Sweet on this Sunday Sampler.IMG_0937

Now lately, some pillows have been coming undone from their protective cases. This is with the help of little hands. This new discovery of “I can pull out the pillow” is a great dexterity skill but, as the whole country knows, flu season has been relentless and not keeping pillows sanitary is not an option. So to keep pillows safeguarded, I am putting my snap tool to use. Why?

  1. Because I don’t have time to make feel like making 15 more pillow cases with envelope closures.
  2. Snaps are more secure because…..
  3. They would soon figure out the envelope opens up.
  4. Never, ever underestimate the ingenuity of a 2 year old.
  5. Or even a 1 year old.
  6. Trust me on this!
  7. I’ve even had the pleasure of seeing a child stick feet into 2 separate pillows to walk around pretending they had Big feet this winter. Who’dathunk?! (but it was cute).

No Skating/ WPC/ Sunday Sampler

More Stitching, Less Bi#$hing. My mantra for the week. I would have loved to head out on a nice neighborhood walk to participate with a lovely, picturesque view as your ‘Tour Guide” in the Weekly Photo Challenge, but the weather didn’t cooperate all weekend. We ended up with this view out my back door.

No skating for me.

So you’re going to get a tour through a quiet weekend at home alongside my sewing machine. Hopefully it’s not too boring for you.

Choosing the pattern first, I thought this one would be user friendly for my out-of-practice dressmaking skills. I can’t even remember the last time I made a garment — out of fabric that is. There have been plenty of hats, shawls and the like via crochet just to clarify.

I like the new look of the flared sleeves. But for myself, they are not practical. I’m the roll-up-your-sleeves kind of gal during the week. I have to wash hands, dishes, toys and wipe too many noses during the day in my line of work to bother with that style. So I decided on View D.

Tour Guide

Framed/Sunday Sampler

I recently read something that said, “Collect things you love, that are authentic to you, and your house becomes your story.” What a great way to describe my latest Sunday Sampler finished project.

In a prior post, I showed a gift from Aunt Maybelle and my plan for it. This was my Christmas break undertaking. It was time to do some quilting that had been on the backburner for a bit due to life in general. Here’s a picture to refresh your memory. ChristmasEveBlog2

I’m please to say the block is completed and ready to put on display. Before going further, I wanted to share a picture tutorial of one way to display a single quilt block should you ever find yourself in possession of one of these gems.

A slide show seems to be the best format for today’s share. So hope you enjoy seeing the process I chose to complete my latest piece of hand quilting.

Help With the Dishes/Sunday Sampler

It’s snowing here in central Missouri this morning. Not our first, but another one of those little 1 inch varieties. Just enough to keep me home. The plus to that is I find things to do that need doing. Dishes are always on that list.

This Sunday Sampler, I decided to share a little something from the shop that you might be interested in using to dress up the kitchen counter while doing the dreaded dishes.

Should you decide to make one yourself, all you’ll need is some fabric sewn together in a pleasing pattern, cotton batting for the center, another fabric for you backing and some bias binding for your edge finish. I would recommend the cotton batting for good absorption. You might also upcycle an old towel or cotton blanket for the middle layer. Be creative!

In case the dish mat is not your thing, there are a few other ideas for its use.

Icing/Sunday Sampler

Sunday Sampler

While the world is trying to ice up outside this morning here in Mid-Missouri, I’m going to show you a little recipe from yesterday. It was the hubby’s birthday and I wanted to change up the typical cake result. What better way than with the frosting??

The recipe below is from a 1st edition of America Cooks, my Etsy find and a wonderful reference in case you care to look one up. Be prepared to pay. They are highly sought after and I am grateful to have found mine.

Before the toppings begin though, you naturally have to have the cake. So, whipped it up, poured it into 3 pans, and baked it.

Love- The Main Ingredient

Do you know how much a difference an extra cake layer can make? Trust me, it elevates flavor to a new level. No pun intended.

Very sloppy appearance here but I had only a teeny window of opportunity for the picture taking. Had to work fast to keep the cake layers from sliding and breaking.

And there you go, a little glazed on the sides but it didn’t disappoint the samplers. Mission accomplished, a keeper recipe and another birthday for the books. Have a wonderful rest of your Sunday!

 

2017 Favorites/WPC/Sunday Sampler

2017 Favorites

 

This is the last post for 2017 Favorites”>2017 and as the title states, it’ll have my favorites for the year. So without further ado, I hope you’ll enjoy my little rendition from various photo/blog entries of the past year.

To begin on the Sunday Sampler portion of the blog, I introduced my lovely bride-to-be-niece shopping with me for a quilt project. This was a true delight to me to have another member of the next generation interested in creativity of this kind. I was very honored to make the couple a quilt for signatures and sentiments at their wedding reception. And of course, love went into every stitch 🙂

The post that went with this pic also had the most likes for the2017 Favorites“> WordPress Photo Challenge this year. Seems roads to fabric stores are favorable to many.

Which leads to the next pic which won the 3rd most Hearts on my Instagram page for 2017…

But it was my personal favorite for the Little Moments app project. (yes, I have been neglecting you a tad bit WordPress) 

And at this point, I would be amiss to not mention the A to Z Challenge from April 2017.

The vote for here on Word Press was a tie between black and blue. On my Facebook page, the blue was the winner. Sadly, I still need to make those sashings. It is coming soon. Gotta be ready for the A to Z of 2018 so wouldn’t want to leave this behind. It will be hand quilted by myself and will be no small feat with my schedule.

For my Thursday Doors entries this past year, the post with the most likes was my post on Route 66. I’m pretty sure it must be the idea of Ice Cream that did the trick. Ted Drewes being world reknown might have a teeny bit of influence as well. 😉 And my lovely models truly enjoyed that refreshment–as did the hubster and I.

Missing You/ Sunday Sampler

I’m back with the Sunday Sampler this Christmas Eve 2017. And Quilting is the topic. I’ve been taking advantage of some time off for Christmas by readying some projects for time consumption. Winter keeps many of us indoors more and I am no exception. What better time to be reunited with one of my favorite creative outlets, quilting?!

The pattern above is shown with scraps but a grey background. I chose the tan instead. It definitely needs a neutral solid to make the colorful scraps stand out. The only downside is that I wish I would have made the blocks a little larger than the pattern dictated. It could have been much bigger had I done so. Noting it on the pattern for next time.

Larger view of the quilt. It’ll most likely be a table topper. Maybe for the outdoor patio table this summer?? (I say this as we’ve just received our first measurable snow for the winter.)

This is what we quilters call a OBW (One Block Wonder). I have more than one of these from my aunt but this one is the most complete so I have a plan for it once it has been quilted. Hand quilting is a longer process, but it is well worth it. Not to mention, this block deserves that tender care as it is old and a little fragile. Well worth saving.

Cheshire Cat

Sunday Sampler

Saturday we made a trip to Columbia, Missouri, for a child care training. Unfortunately, upon arrival, we had some terrible news. The trainer who had been planning to head the class, along with her office help, had passed away totally unexpectedly. We have known Annette for several years, had her in my home, exchanged stories of personal experiences and, I feel, were friends. You can imagine the shock and tears that were part of the reactions among our group of caregivers. That’s our job. To care. Being the training was canceled at that point, the decision was made that it was time for my husband and I to regroup and spend some time enjoying life. I think she would have wanted us to do that in her memory.

So we traveled along some side roads on the return trip home, took some great photos, and just took in some views of Mid-Missouri on a September Saturday. I will definitely be sharing some of my pics in the future. But for today, I’m sharing a little purchase I made in Arrow Rock, Missouri, at A Grand Yarn. I highly recommend a look-see.

It’s in this bag. Great things often come in small packages. And this one will be used for me to create a ‘remembrance’ item.

Cheshire Cat

This choice is a definite splurg. I’ve never spent this much on yarn before but it Had to be meant for me on this particular day. 2 things about this package:

  1. I Loved Alice in Wonderland as a girl so much! I am Sure my mother was sick of reading it to me night after night. And notice the ‘Cheshire Cat’ “Wonderland Yarns” and ‘pigments of imagination’. Mother would agree this is the one for me.
  2. Notice the “Beautiful Soup: Pot No. 1”? Annette was always demonstrating recipes, helpful hints and reminding us of the importance of keeping up with our menus.

Yep, Annette, this is meant to be! Rest in Peace and See you on the other side!
