Our home is abuzz with construction workers this summer.
This is about 3 weeks ago. It’s about to be very different. More about that later.
Grandpa and Grandma Hunter with my mother, Eileen, Glenda, Alice and Neal. No Maybelle yet 🙂
While purging our closets to store stuff in temporary spaces, I ran across some books of my Grandmother’s. Inside were photos, cards and mementos that you would expect to find. You know how grandmothers are, they save all those things 🙂 My favorite find was this little gem dated December 6, 1942. It was exactly 1 year after the attack of Pearl Harbor. It gives a glimpse of the past through the eyes of my grandfather who was probably not sure what the future held for him in the Service during World War II.
If you were able to see this, it would burn your eyes. I say this lovingly. My grandfather was not so good at spelling. But Grandma was a 1-room school house teacher before they married so you have to give him an A+ for effort as I’m sure she encouraged him to write. His talents were on the farm. He knew how to noodle. To those of you who may not know, this is hand fishing. I would never attempt sticking my arm in a hole under water to pull out a catfish. Nope.
But for your viewing enjoyment, I have typed it up as it is written. I didn’t correct much of the spelling except to help the reader understand. This was a probably the most conversation I ever heard out of my grandfather. He was a very quiet man. So I am extremely pleased to share it with the world, this glimpse of Americana.

Thank you for reading! I don’t think my grandfather ever had to see battle so we were very lucky. So many weren’t.

Loved the letter from Uncle Glen. People used to spell the way the word sounded…so he did fine. You are right….that is the longest conversation I can remember from him. Thanks so much for sharing.
